A former tropical depression has strengthened into Tropical Cyclone Hidaya in the South Indian Ocean.
Located about 360 km north-northeast of the Comoros, Hidaya is currently moving west at slow speeds (6 km/h). Wind speeds are moderate at 65 km/h with gusts up to 80 km/h.
Good conditions for strengthening exist. Warm sea surface temperatures and weak upper-level winds will likely allow Hidaya to intensify over the next day.
The cyclone's path will take it north of the Comoros on Thursday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding. Later this week, Hidaya could approach the coast of Africa near southern Tanzania and northern Mozambique.

So How are Tropical cyclones named ?
Tropical cyclones are not named after people or in alphabetical order.
Instead, there are predetermined lists developed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for different regions . These lists aim for:
Simplicity: Short, easy-to-remember names for clear communication.
Familiarity: Names relevant to the cultures of the affected regions.
Here's a breakdown of the naming process:
International Committee: An international committee within the WMO maintains and updates these naming lists.
Rotation: Six lists are used in rotation, typically alternating every six years.
Retirement: If a storm is particularly destructive, its name is retired and replaced with a new one.
So, the next time you hear about a tropical cyclone, you'll know it got its name from a list designed for easy communication and cultural relevance!
