Background of Tanga Regional Referral Hospital (Bombo Hospital)
In 1895 Dr. F. Plehn noted that about 70% of the morbidity in Tanga town was malarial in origin. Cerebral malaria and black water fever were the most common causes of death in Tanga. During that time there was no proper hospital and hence the idea of having a hospital was realized. The idea was communicated to Dr. Alexander Berker, the first Chief Medical Officer of Tanganyika.
Before the construction of the present Regional Referral Hospital, Liebels Hotel which used to be opposite the Sea View Hotel was rented and temporarily used as a hospital. The building remained as a hospital for only a short time as Dr. Alexander Berker had already drawn plans of the Spacious Government Hospital still in use today. The plot which was formerly Liebels Hotel is currently a petrol filling station. Construction of the present Tanga Regional Hospital started in 1896 and the work was completed nine years later.
In 1951 Mr. Christas Galanos donated £50,000 for construction of inpatient accommodation for women and children and the foundation stone was laid down by the Governor, Sir Edward Twinning in 1956. The construction work was completed in 1958.
In 1959 Rodoussakis donated funds for construction of a 52 beds ward. The ward was meant to be infectious diseases ward particularly tuberculosis. More buildings were constructed in 2007/2008 (OPD Complex, Operating Theatre, Maintenance Unit) through the support of KfW and currently Tanga Regional Referral Hospital is the largest Regional Referral Hospital in Tanzania.
