  1. PROGRAM BACKGROUND

Venture37 Program Description

Land O’Lakes Venture37 – funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) – is implementing the Dairy Nourishes Africa – Building Inclusive Livelihoods through Dairy (DNA-BILD) activities from July 2022 to July 2024.

DNA-BILD expands upon early successes of DNA and is intentionally designed to complement and leverage DNA’s participation in the newly launched Tanzania Inclusive Processor-Producer Partnerships in Dairy Project (TI3P), of which Venture37 is an implementing partner. DNA-BILD aims to impact resource-poor, opportunity-constrained stakeholders across the dairy value chain that would otherwise not be engaged by TI3P, particularly women and youth, to enable inclusive, climate-smart, economic, and innovative development in the dairy sector. This will be achieved by a) growing consumer demand, b) driving enterprises to full potential, c) increasing farmer productivity and sustainability, and d) strengthening the operating environment.

  1. ACTIVITIES TO BE FUNDED

All grants are competitive in nature and subject to a cost share requirement. All grants awarded will be In-Kind Grants in order to directly distribute goods and/or provide services purchased by Land O´Lakes Venture37 to the grantee. No payments will be made directly to the grantee.

Dairy Challenge Fund

Purpose: To scale up FAEs and resource-constrained, women and youth smallholder farmers to adequately invest in improved and innovative agricultural practices that sustainably intensify production and enhance climate resilience. FAEs will use the Dairy Challenge Fund to improve or adopt appropriate innovations that will enhance production, profitability, processing of dairy quality products and last mile distribution of affordable dairy products to low-income communities.

Examples of activities supported: Improvement of processing such as bulk pasteurizer, milking equipment, milk quality testing equipment, support forage production by increasing smallholder dairy farmers’ (SHF) access to forage seeds, fodder chopper and tree seedling material. On last mile distribution support of FAE will target access to distribution facilities such as mobile trolleys and display fridges.

Eligibility: DNA-BILD’s target recipients for in-kind matching grants are FAEs, cooperatives, smallholder dairy farmers (SHF), dairy input suppliers, milk collection centers and offtake markets in the Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions. The principal eligibility criteria for consideration to receive a grant from BILD include:

  • Organization or business is legally registered or otherwise formally recognized by local authorities
  • The enterprise has a minimum collection or processing capacity of 100 litres per day.
  • Preference will be given to organizations or businesses majority-owned by women or youth or with demonstrably strong women and youth membership and participation.
